[00:00] ’cause when you craft your vision, big enough failures, just going to happen along the way. That’s just part of the deal, right? You’re not going to get away with living in amazing life and crafting that ideal vision and achieving it without failure. It’s just part of the team.
[00:20] Welcome to another episode of sales. Through failure. This is your host, Jim Harshaw, Jr. And today I’m bringing you a solo episode. We’re talking about how to get unstuck in your career. Maybe you want to start your side hustle or do you want to get promoted or do you want to change companies or maybe you want to change industries altogether?
[00:38] We’re going to talk about all those, because I talked to so many people who feel stuck, they feel stuck in their lives, and most of that comes back to. Career. So we’re going to break down five specific ways, things that you can do to get unstuck and to get to your next level. These are practical, actionable tactical things that you can do.
[00:58] First, if you enjoy the success or failure podcast, you can help me grow this thing. Number one, you can do that by telling a friend, right, text them right now and say, Hey, you got to listen to episode 346, which is the episode you’re listening to right now, you can just go to JimHarshawJr.com/346
[01:15] You can text the net or maybe you want to recommend the episode with Robert O’Neill. Who’s the guy he’s the Navy seal who shot and killed. Osama bin Laden interviewed him in episode 342. That one was an amazing episode. Got a lot of great feedback about that one. He actually recounts the mission of. To find and kill Ben Rodan, fascinating interview with Robert O’Neill again, episode 342, but give that one a share, tell a friend, stop.
[01:42] What you’re doing right now, text one friend. That’s how this thing grows. So thank you for doing that. And the other thing you can do is leave a rating and review. On whatever platform that it is that you’re listening to this on. So Chad parks left me this review. He said, the title of it was fill your brain content.
[02:00] So this is the kind of content you want to fill your brain with. He said, ah, Jim is bringing it in every episode. This is must have. Phil your brain content with actionable steps to follow. Chad, thank you for the rating and review for the listener. If you want to get your name on the podcast here, go ahead and leave me a reading and review, and I’m going to be cycling through those in the future episodes.
[02:22] Com all right, let’s get into the real deal here. The content that I want to talk to you about today, how to get unstuck in your career again, whether it’s maybe your side hustle or you want to get a promotion, or you want to change companies or change industries, we’re going to talk. Alright, here we go.
[02:37] Number one first, you have to stop doing what you’re doing, which is maybe thrown out resumes or doing the things that you feel like you’re supposed to be doing to, to get to that next level, that next career, the next job, whatever it is, and pull back, you have to take a step backwards first. And this is actually what we do with my clients in my coaching program.
[02:56] Reveal your path. We stepped back from. All right. What is it that you want? I mean, what do you want your life to look like? Have you actually identified, like, what is it that I want to do day to day? Like, how do I want to spend my day? What are the hours that I want to work? What kind of money do I want to make?
[03:13] Who are the kind of people that I want to be around? What kind of company do I want to be working? Do I want to be a leader. Do I want to be in the C-suite? Do I want to be out in the field? Right. Do I want to have an office? Do I want to be in an office all the time or do I want to be in the office?
[03:28] Part-time and sometimes I’m working remotely or sometimes I’m out, you know, traveling and meeting and networking with people, et cetera. Like what does that day look like? What does that miracle day? That miracle life look like for you? Right. And. You’ve got to dream a little bit. You’ve got to have a vision.
[03:45] You’ve got to have the Beehag right. Big, hairy, audacious goals. A lot of people like to reference that that comes from the book built to last written by Jim Collins who wrote good to great. And also Jerry porous, he had big, hairy, audacious goals. Like what is it that you like that you really want for your life?
[04:03] I mean, dream, dream big. Don’t just dream kind of, as far as you can see, you don’t have to. It’s all the steps to get from here to there. You just gotta be on a dream. It, and you gotta be able to see the first step. Right? Your vivid vision is something I’ve been talking a lot about lately. If you follow me over on Instagram and Twitter, I talk a lot about.
[04:23] My different books and things that I read, things that I love to share. And vivid vision is a book that I read. I got this recommended to me just a few months ago, and man, it has been such a game changer for me. I actually interviewed Cameron, Harold, who is the author. After I read the book three times, I was like, man, I got to have this guy on.
[04:43] So Cameron, Harold is going to be coming on the show here real soon. The interview is actually already been recorded. And it’s in the queue to be delivered to you. So make sure you’re subscribed to success through failure because that book was a game changer for me. And it’s going to be a game changer for you.
[04:59] All right. So the first thing I’m telling you to do here is to take a step back and just do some. Just open-ended journaling. What do I want my day to be like, start with scripting out the day? Well, I wake up at this time and then I do this and this and this, some days I might, you know, work out other days, I might do more meditation and journaling or craft out those days.
[05:20] What are those ideal days in that ideal life? What does that look like for you? All right. And here’s the. Even when you craft that, that ideal vision, there’s going to be failure along the way. You have to be willing to embrace failure to get to there because when you craft your vision, big enough failures, just going to happen along the way.
[05:40] That’s just part of the deal, right? You’re not going to get away with living in amazing life in crafting that ideal vision and achieving it without failure. It’s just part of the deal, right? So that’s number one, crafting out that ideal day, that ideal life. I interviewed bill Burnett back in episode nine.
[05:59] 288. And again, back in episode 124. So he is the author of a couple of books on designing your life and designing your work life. He’s actually a Stanford design professor and a lot of students would always come back after they graduated. And they’re like, ah, man, I, you know, I’m out in the workforce, been out there two or three or five years.
[06:20] My job, my career is just not what I thought it was going to be. So he wrote these books about how to prototype and try new things and iterate just like you would, if you were designing a product, he’s a design professor. So he wrote these books. With the idea that you could design your life. Like you could design a product and he really talks a lot about prototyping, right?
[06:43] You don’t have to go all in on, Hey, I got to quit my job and go all in on my business. I got to quit my job and go into a different industry. I’ve got to quit my job and then go find that other job. No, you don’t have to go. I think if you don’t know if you want to work for that other company, maybe doing the same thing, for example, you don’t have to go all in and cross your fingers and close your eyes and just hope that it works out and hope that you like the company.
[07:06] No, you don’t have to do that. You can do prototyping activities. For example, talk to. Like go have coffee with somebody who works there, or somebody who has worked there or call them up on the phone or send them an email. It’d be like, you’ll find, find their email list or go to LinkedIn and find some people who work there and send them a message like, Hey, can I just pick your brain about what it’s like to work there or what it’s like to work in your inbox?
[07:32] Maybe you can even shadow them for a day. Maybe you just go have a cup of coffee, but maybe you build a relationship and you go shadow them and you kind of find out really what it’s like to work there. Or maybe you just get some kind of appointment where you go meet at that place at that company. Right.
[07:49] Maybe you can volunteer or somehow get engaged in an organization that might be more closely related to something you want to do. Or you want to try. And maybe you have a side business that you’re starting and you’re not really sure what direction you want to go in. It. We’ll talk to some people who are doing it right.
[08:07] Volunteer to help someone out who’s already doing what you want to do. Take steps. You don’t have to go all in. Right. The whole mentality of people. Yeah. Go all in, sell out, go for it. You know, jump in the parachute will appear now. Like you don’t have to do that. Sure. You go forward if you want, but there are smarter ways.
[08:28] And again, I’m going to tell you this embrace failure along the way. You’re not going to like some of the jobs or the industries or the companies that you test out that you prototype, that you try. Guess what? That’s exactly what you’re looking for. You’re looking for opportunities to say no. And then opportunities to say, yes, you’re only going to get there by failing along the way.
[08:49] Listen, you know, you’re going to reach out to people and they’re not going to say. And that’s okay. Right. And that leads me to my next point. All right. So the second one was prototyping. Quick interruption. If you like what you’re hearing here, and you want to learn how you can implement this into your life.
[09:07] Just go to JimHarshawJr.com/APPLY to see how you can get a free one-on-one coaching session with me. That’s JimHarshawJr.com/APPLY. Now back to the show. And the third one is. There’s this hidden job market out there that is not listed on indeed.com, not listed on the websites that you’re looking for, jobs on.
[09:34] How do you find them? How do you find these jobs? The hidden job market is far bigger than the posted the listed job market. How do you do it? Network, reach out to people, connect with people. I help people with this in reveal your path all the time. Like the main reason people come to us. And they feel stuck is because they’re stuck in their career.
[09:55] And guess what? This works like networking, reaching out to people, connecting with people. Not only does it help you with the prototyping experiences. I talked talk to you about last time, but it helps you uncover this hidden job market who are the people that you know, who are working in that field. And that industry go have coffee with them, set up a zoom call with them, connect with them.
[10:19] Reach out to them and have a conversation and just tell him what you’re doing. Tell him what you want. Tell him what you’re interested in, and guess what these people know people magic happens. When you connect with people, you will find opportunities simply by connecting with people. So number three is networking, right?
[10:39] I told you I had five for you. Number one, identify your ideal day. Ideal life script. Number two prototype, try new things, try different things. Number three, network, listen, one or two of these is probably like a no brainer for you, but are you doing this? Are you actually reaching out to people? Are you actually connecting?
[10:59] Are you actually prototyping? Have you actually stepped back and scripted out that ideal day? Have you done the work? So that’s number three. Okay. Number four. There are so many opportunities out there. To grow your knowledge to take courses. You can take courses online for free from Ivy league institutions, and you might be able to pay a hundred bucks or 200 bucks at the end.
[11:22] And if you complete it and get a cert certification or a certificate, right, what are the skills and knowledge? And what’s the experience that you need? Go find. Online certificates, online education. There’s so many free opportunities and resources. We’ll have some of those listed in the action plan. Go to Jim Marshall Jr com slash action.
[11:42] And we’ll have some of those websites listed where you can get these certificates and get this online education for free or next to nothing. What about volunteering? Go get that experience when you get that experience, it builds confidence. Oh, by the way, if you’re volunteering, you’re going to be. And talking to people and meeting people.
[12:03] When you get these certifications and take these courses, it improves your resume. You might also meet people in some, some, uh, connections that you make through these courses. And guess what? Let me say this once again, embrace failure along the way. Just try things, explore courses. You may not like some, you may fail.
[12:22] That’s fine. That is the path to getting onto. If you just keep doing what everybody else is doing, you know, I’ve got to tighten up my resume. I got to submit more resumes. No, that’s not how it works. Yeah, you might get lucky, but you’ve got to build the skills and build the experience. You’ve got to network.
[12:41] You’ve got to try different things and prototype. It’s all gotta to be based around what you actually want in your life. That ideal. All right. So I’ve given you four, the first one, the ideal day, scripting that out. Second one, prototyping third, one, networking, and finding that hidden job market and making connections, building relationships, the fourth one, gaining skills and experiences through volunteering and online education.
[13:04] Last one, one of my clients, Dave, Dave, if you’re listening and I know you listened to just about every podcast of mine, you know who you are, but he recommended a TV show called undercover billionaire it’s on Amazon prime. And the season two, which I’m watching right now has grant Cardone, Monique. I pronounced pronounce her name wrong, but Monique inlet, mostly and Elaine Claudia, they’re all billing.
[13:29] All three of them are billionaires. And what they do is they send them into a town where they have no connections. Um, they give me an assumed name. They get $100, a cell phone with no context. And a truck or an SUV, that’s it like an old beat up kind of truck or SUV. That’s all they get. And they just drive into town with a hundred bucks and they have to figure out within 90 days, the goal is to build a business valued at a million dollars or more.
[13:57] And it is well, as it goes without saying it’s really hard, right? It shows how they, they have to get a place to say, I mean, you can blow a hundred bucks on a hotel room first night and be a completely out of money. So day one, they’d roll into town and they got to figure out where am I going to stay tonight?
[14:14] And guess what? Two of the three actually find a free place to stay two of the three, find a free place to stay. And the other one finds a really inexpensive place to say, but how do they do that? They continue to make progress day after day, week after week towards not only turning the a hundred dollars into $500 and a thousand dollars, but actually building a business worth in valued at $1 million or more, how do they do it?
[14:43] And this was written up on my whiteboard, right beside. Just ask, just ask. I mean, ask, I had a conversation this morning. It was one of my clients, Paul, and he’s he wants to get promoted and he’s stuck. We were having a conversation about this a couple of weeks ago. He’s like, I don’t know how I’m kind of stuck.
[15:00] And there’s these people who I know, um, as smarter, smarter than them, I have more experienced than them. They’re they’re head of me. I want to get into their roles, the conversation, he and I had a couple of. Just to ask, talk to your supervisor, see, see what you can ask her to get to your next level to become he’s at a director level.
[15:19] He wants to get the vice president. What are you going to do? Guess what he shows up on the call this morning. Guess what Jim, I just asked and I know exactly what I have to do. Literally. He knows the exact steps, the exact expectations. If he does these things, boom, it’s done. He’s going to get the promotion.
[15:34] So it’s very clear. It’s not gonna be easy. But it’s clear. Just ask, ask what you have to do, ask what you can do, ask for help, just ask these billionaires or asking for help. That’s how they build these businesses. So you’ve got to ask, don’t try to go at. All right. I’m going to throw in these two last recommendations real quick to get unstuck.
[15:57] You may need a hard reset, and I share how to do that in episode 220. So go there next, listen to that episode next. Or if you want to build your side hustle, we’ll get really specific on how to do that. I share how I built my side hustle and how you can’t do an episode 289 to turn my side hustle into my full-time gig.
[16:16] You can also get the action plans if you want to kind of skip and get the, the cliff. Go to JimHarshawJr.com/ACTION. And you can get the PDF action plans for episode two 20 and episode 2 89, as well as this episode, listen, don’t stay stuck.
