Episode #533
You need infrastructure, not just more effort. A lot of high performers try to solve every problem with more discipline, more focus, or more hours. But if everything depends on you pushing harder, eventually life gets heavier than it needs to be. The right infrastructure helps reduce friction so you can spend more energy on what matters most.
The people around you are part of your performance system. Your spouse, friends, coach, mentors, mastermind, advisors, doctor, and community all shape how you think, lead, grow, and make decisions. The right people help you see what you’re too close to see. They challenge you, support you, and help you stay aligned with the man you’re working to become.
Your spouse should be treated like a teammate. It’s easy, especially when work and kids get busy, to drift into roommate mode. But your spouse is one of the most important people in your life infrastructure. When you see that relationship as a true partnership, you lead differently, serve differently, and create more strength at home.
You need people who challenge your beliefs. A strong support system is not made up of people who simply agree with you. You need people who share your values, but also push your thinking. The right friends and mentors help you grow because they are willing to challenge assumptions, ask better questions, and keep you from drifting.
You are part of someone else’s infrastructure too. This episode is not just about building a team around you. It’s also about becoming the kind of person who helps others carry what they’re carrying. Mentoring, serving, encouraging, and showing up for others sharpens you too. Growth is not just about who supports you. It’s also about who you help become better.
“The highest performers in the world have a coach.”
“Find somebody to mentor, again, could be formal, could be informal, but there are people out there who need your help.”
“Work on community, this is such an important part of your infrastructure, have other people who you can serve, and then other people who can, you know, when the time comes and you need it, they can serve you and help you as well.”
A lot of driven men are trying to build a better life with the wrong assumption.
They think the answer is more discipline, more willpower, more time management, more grinding it out.
But if everything in your life depends on you pushing harder, eventually something gives… Your health, your marriage, your patience, your focus, your peace of mind.
In this solo episode of “Success for the Athletic-Minded Man,” I’m bringing back one of the highest-performing episodes I’ve ever recorded because the message is even more relevant today than when I first published it.
We’re talking about the infrastructure you need in your life.
Not apps. Not hacks. Not another morning routine.
Your people.
The friends who challenge you.
The spouse you treat like a teammate.
The coach who helps you see what you’re missing.
The mentor, the mentee, the assistant, the doctor, the financial advisor, the community around you.
If you want to maximize what’s possible in your personal and professional life, you need the right people in the right places.
And with AI and technology changing how we work and live, this has only become more important.
This episode will help you look at your life differently and ask a better question: Who needs to be on my team so I can become the man I’m called to be?
