Episode #185
View the situation from the other person's perspective and approach the conversation with love and understanding.
Begin speaking up by asking questions to seek first to understand before being understood.
Communicate positively and clearly: be concise, avoid complaining, replace "but" with "and," and get help (e.g., Toastmasters) if needed.
Our enemies often have a rational position and it's very defensible. In many cases, if you put yourself on the other side of the table, you could see their position and except for fate, you may be on that side.
Speaking up starts with asking questions.
Whenever you use the word but in a sentence, it negates everything else that you said before that.
Will you take action when it counts? (15:31)
We all have defining moments in our lives. Sometimes we expect them– like getting married or winning a championship. Other times we don’t– like a death in the family or a surprise promotion.
Will you back down when yours arrives? Or will you face your fear? Take action? Speak up? Move on?
